Sun terraces in Forest HillWe enjoy a design challenge which this project certainly was. Our client presented us with a steeply descending clay slope left by the developers of the clientÕs newly built home. In close collaboration with the client, we devised a series of interlinking terraces, retained with boulders. Some of these terraces contain planting; others contain cedar sun decks and the largest terrace contains a lawn. A natural stone stairway leads down to the gardenÕs lowest point, which contains a cool slate patio surrounded by a bamboo grove. Comfort can be found in different seasons and at different times of day just by moving around the garden. A year later we returned and created an earth-cooled summer house at the top end of the garden with a cedar decked area with integrated planters as its roof. This deck can be accessed directly from the house and has views over London. |
